EARTH began with looking down. Walking through New York City, I found myself drawn to the surfaces beneath my feet: cracks, weathered concrete, paint, shadows, and small fragments of everyday life. The sidewalks began to unfold as landscapes. I wondered how much I had passed without seeing.

I had dreamed of learning to fly and photographing the earth from an airplane—of finding patterns and hidden geometries through distance. Yet the shift I was seeking became possible on foot. Close at hand, a worn surface could suggest an unfamiliar terrain. Something ordinary could hold my attention long enough to become extraordinary.

That discovery changed the way I moved through the city. Surfaces marked by time, use, and exposure became places to explore. The longer I looked, the more I found. Photographing them gave me a way to stay with what I noticed, preserving a particular encounter with a place that would continue to change.

Presented as diptychs, the photographs invite the eye to move between images, finding correspondences and differences. Small shifts in framing alter our sense of scale and what we believe we are seeing. A crack becomes a line to follow. A fragment suggests a larger world. The viewer brings their own associations to these surfaces, making each act of looking a little different.

Looking back, I recognize in EARTH an early expression of a question that continues through my work: how do we come to recognize the preciousness of what is here? Often, distance or loss makes the familiar newly visible. These photographs explore the possibility of finding that attention within the present.

EARTH holds moments when I stopped and looked closely at the world I was moving through. I hope the photographs offer that possibility to someone else: a reason to linger, and a sense that there is still something to discover within the life we already inhabit.
